To enjoy a sports biopic featuring an American icon, watch 42 online. 42 is centered on Jackie Robinson and his struggles as a racial minority to integrate into the Major League. The title of this film is taken from the jersey number that he wore in the course of his career in the league.
Though much of the film takes place in the 1947 season of the Brooklyn Dodgers, one of Robinson’s prominent examples of struggle against racism happens in 1945 when he is traveling with his team. When the Kansas City Monarchs’ team bus stops to refuel at a station, Robinson is denied admittance into the restroom simply because he is African-American. Robinson does not take it lying down and threatens to have the bus refuel at a different point.
Robinson then encounters a Brooklyn Dodgers’ scout. The Dodgers sign him up for a monthly pay of 600 dollars and a signing bonus of 3,500 dollars. On his part Robinson is supposed to keep his temper under control. At around this time Robinson also calls Rachel his girlfriend and gets her to accept his marriage proposal.
But at Dodgers, Robinson meets with resistance as most of the players declare in a petition that they will boycott playing if Robinson is included. Leo Durocher, the manager, however rebuffs them and includes Robinson in the team. The decision proves to be a wise one as Robinson becomes instrumental to the team’s success.
But Robinson continues to endure racist behavior on and off the field including from opposing teams managers. How will Robinson’s future play out eventually? Find out in 42.
