To sample the first movie from Poland to win the 2015 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, watch Ida online. Ida is set in the 60s in Poland and it is centred on a nun named Anna who is about to take her vows. However her prioress wants her to visit with her sole remaining relative, an auntie named Wanda.
Unlike Ida who is prim and proper, Wanda is a bed-hopping, heavy-drinking, chain-smoking judge. Wanda goes on to reveal to Anna that her birth name was actually Ida Lebenstein. Her father and mother had been of Jewish origin. The Lebensteins had been killed during the Second World War at the peak of the Nazi occupation of Poland. Since she was just a toddler the convent took her in and she was raised there.
Before she can return to the convent Wanda suggests that Ida should indulge in earthly pleasures prior to taking her vows. Wanda goes ahead to set up Ida with a musician but Ida declines. The one thing Ida wants now is to locate the remains of her parents.
Wanda obliges and leads her to the Lebensteins’ former home. But the house now has new occupants, the family of a Polish man named Feliks. At the height of the war Wanda had left the Lebensteins under the care of Feliks who sheltered them from the Nazis. But when Wanda demands to know their fate, the truth is quite unexpected and from then everything that had been ruled out is in play again and at the same time the surprises keep coming!
