Mother of George (2013)
With immigrant issues taking centerstage in a politically-heated environment, getting to watch Mother Of George online serves to show that besides the waters being muddied by the political rhetoric, immigrants continue to lead normal lives with normal struggles like everyone else. In this film the story revolves around African immigrants living in Brooklyn, New York where Ayodele runs a restaurant.
Mother of George starts off with a wedding ceremony between Adenike and Ayodele. Adenike the bride is then presented with fertility beads by Ma Ayo, who is her new husband’s mother. However the beads do not seem to work because a pregnancy is not forthcoming. Adenike resorts to other methods like taking a special tea but that too doesn’t bear fruits. Meanwhile the pressure from Ma Ayo continues to grow, as she badly wants grandchildren.
When Adenike seeks medical help she is informed that there’s a solution in sight but Ayodele must be involved too. Ayodele however is not keen on cooperating. When the option of adopting a child is brought up, Adenike is adamant that she wants to bring up her own biological child, not somebody else’s flesh and blood.
Not one to give up, Ma Ayo suggests that Adenike could try siring a child with Biyi, a brother to Ayodele! After the initial hesitation Biyi finally warms up to the idea and agrees to impregnate Adenike. With Adenike pregnant, Ayodele assumes he is the one responsible. But Adenike finds herself in a dilemma, as she cannot live with this deception. Will she confess to free her conscience at the risk of her marriage?
