To watch Philomena online, you have to be prepared for a story that intersects religion, same-sex relationships, stigma, AIDS all in one film. Philomena is the story of a woman by the same name who’s trying to find her son who she was forced to give up for adoption shortly after birth. Philomena does not do it alone but with the help of Martin Sixsmith, a former government adviser.
The two start the search in Ireland at the convent where Philomena delivered her son. The search hits a dead end when the two learn that the adoption documents had been razed in a fire. The only document that was saved is a contract that forbade Philomena from making contact with her son. Martin thinks this is quite convenient. While visiting a local pub later, Martin learns from the locals that the burning of the documents was deliberate. The reality was that the kids were sold off to wealthy Americans for a thousand sterling pounds.
The search then turns to America where Philomena and Martin find out that her son, who was initially named Anthony, took up another name – Michael A. Hess. Michael had not only qualified as a lawyer but had been a senior official in the Republican administrations of Ronald Reagan and his successor George Bush.
They learn more about Michael including the fact that he was gay and that he had succumbed to AIDS eight years earlier. A video from Michael’s boyfriend, Pete Olssen, reveals that he had indeed tried to get in touch with his mother in his final days. He had even travelled to the convent but the nuns had told him that his mother had abandoned him. Will Philomena ever forgive the nuns?
