To sample a film that has a fresh take on the Nazi Germany before, during and after the Second World War, watch The Book Thief online. The Book Thief begins with ‘Death’ speaking and confessing how intriguing he finds Liesel.
The first time we see Liesel, she is accompanying her family on a train journey. Her brother however starts nose bleeding and the next thing we know is that he has passed away and we fast-forward to his funeral. While he is being buried a book falls out of his pockets. The title of the book is The Gravedigger’s Handbook.
The film fast-forwards again to Liesel being put up in a foster home. When Liesel starts school it turns out that she is illiterate. When a boy teases her Liesel thumps him mercilessly and her next-door neighbor, Rudy, is so impressed that they strike up a friendship.
On learning about her illiteracy her foster father, Hans, starts schooling her. The reading bug soon bites Liesel and she now wants to read everything and anything she can get her hands on.
When Rudy and Liesel are conscripted into the Hitler Youth Movement, Liesel is extremely upset when she is forced to join in a book burning exercise. But once the bonfire has ended and all have left, Liesel manages to salvage a book. She is spotted by the mayor’s wife, Ilsa, doing this. Ilsa goes on to invite Liesel to her family’s library at the risk of inviting the mayor’s wrath. This is just the beginning of risk taking for Liesel for she will not only risk her life for the love of books but also for befriending and harboring Jews.
