To sample the work of a filmmaker whose previous film earned Iran its first Oscar in the Best Foreign Language category, watch The Past online. The film captures human relationships when they have reached breaking point and others are just beginning to sprout.
The Past begins with an Iranian guy named Ahmad returning to France from Iran with the goal of finalizing divorce proceedings with his soon-to-be ex-wife. Ahmad and Marie (his wife) had lived in Paris as a couple for many years before their separation four years ago.
Now reunited, they still have some affection for each other, though there’s also some resentment to contend with. It gets complicated when Ahmad learns that Marie already has plans to marry a laundry owner named Samir. Samir on the other hand is still married to a wife who is in a coma after she unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide.
Though Ahmad and Marie never had children together, Marie had two children from a previous relationship. Lucie, who is the eldest of Marie’s children, regards Ahmad warmly. This is in sharp contrast to the poor relationship she has with Samir and her mother. In fact Lucie is strongly against the relationship between the two. This is despite the fact that Marie is already expectant with Samir’s child. The fact that this is a family with divided allegiances is further complicated by the fact that Lea, Lucie’s younger sister, has struck up a strong friendship with Fouad, the young son of Samir who is frequently to be found visiting Marie’s house.
