The consequence of blind adherence to religion and tradition is the theme that jumps out when you watch We Are What We Are online. The film revolves around a family whose lives are turned upside down when the matriarch dies. An autopsy is conducted by Dr. Barrow and it is discovered that her death was caused by a disease afflicting people who practise cannibalism.
After this revelation, daughters of the dead woman, Iris and Rose, are not sure whether they should take up the religious duties their mother used to perform. Iris however will not be dissuaded and insists that they must perform the annual ritual.
Meanwhile the girls’ little brother, Rory, finds his father in his shed with a young female hostage. Rory is forced to leave as Frank makes Iris and Rose slaughter the hostage. Frank then makes his family eat her flesh. A kind neighbour who brings a vegetarian dish for the family is coldly received when she mentions that she heard the screams of a woman emanating from the shed.
At around the same time, Dr. Barrow, whose daughter had previously disappeared without a trace, stumbles upon a human skeleton in a creek. When Barrow gets Anders, the sheriff’s deputy, to conduct investigations, more evidence is found in the same creek. Just then Iris finds Anders in the creek and confronts him. Fiercely attracted to her, Anders follows Iris to a lone spot before confessing his love for her. Just as they are about to get intimate, Frank appears and kills him!
How many more deaths will occur before someone stops this cannibalistic family? You have to watch We Are What We Are to find out.
